Public transport in Bilbao: what you need to know to get around the city

Transporte público en Bilbao

You’re in luck! If you are organizing your stay in Bilbao you will like to know that it is one of the cities with the best services to move around. Nothing more and nothing less than four. What are they? How do they work? Which one suits you best? We explain the public transport options in Bilbao that you will find when you arrive.

How to get around in Bilbao

In Bilbao you have four public transport options:

  • Meter
  • Renfe
  • Tram
  • Bilbobus

What do you need to use them? The Barik Card

In Bizkaia, there is a rechargeable card called Barik. With it you can travel on all public transport more cheaply than buying single tickets. It has a price of € 3 and you must make an initial balance load of at least € 5.

You have two card options:

  • Generic or anonymous: this type of card allows you to share it with up to 10 people. That is, validating twice, you will subtract the amount corresponding to two trips. This card can be purchased at all Bilbao Metro stations, Renfe stations, at Bizkaibus information booths and at all those tobacconists or kiosks that have the Barik badge.
  • Personalized: it is for the exclusive use of its owner, you can not share it. To obtain this card you have to go to the Customer Service Offices of any of the following Bilbao Metro stops: San Inazio, Casco Viejo or Ansio. There they personalize your card with your photo and your personal data. In this way, in case of loss, you can recover the balance you already had.
